Great Northern eastbound freight slows to pick up train orders
at Karlsruhe, North Dakota during a clear, cold winter's day
in 1964. Great Northern #405 A & B, an EMD built FT supplies
the power for the Twin Cities bound time freight.
The
combined FT A&B units produce 2700 HP. The two units were
semi-permanently coupled together. One reason for this was to
stave off Brotherhood claims that each unit was a separate locomotive,
thus requiring a separate fireman. This requirement was in the
1937 Diesel Agreement contract.
FT
405 is in her final months sporting the famous Great Northern
Green & Omaha Orange paint scheme. A more simplified paint
design will have the Green extend down to the bottom of the unit
and that will eliminate the green banner along the sides.
Karlsruhe,
population of about 140 is located about 34 miles east of Mnot
on the 'Surrey Cutoff' of the Great Northern Railroad. The cutoff
was built in 1916 to reduce travel time between Fargo, North
Dakota and Minot, by bypassing Grand Forks. This would cut the
miles on the 281 mile run by 55 miles.
However
there have been times when the North Dakota winter can bring
the entire railroad to it's knees.. the 'Cutoff' was closed for
8 days following the March 1966 blizzard.
Today
it is the Burlington Northern Santa Fe that rattles the windows
in this small prairie town.
